Vienna Festival

The Vienna Festival is a cultural festival in Vienna, which takes place during five weeks in May and June each year.

History

First Festival events took place in 1927. The re-founding of the Vienna Festival took place after the Second World War in 1951 in the still occupied by the Allies, City of Vienna. Since 1962, the Theater an der Wien serves as one of the main venues in addition to the Halls E and G in the Museum Quarter and many other varying venues. The opening of the Vienna Festival traditionally takes place in the town square. The opening fanfare was composed by Werner Pirchner.

Since 2002, Luc Bondy is director of the Vienna Festival, after he had already been the Acting Director from 1998. The music theater division is headed since 2005 by Music Director Stéphane Lissner, the division drama since 2008 of Acting Director Stefanie Carp after she was responsible for the drama program in 2005.

During five to six weeks in May and June, it is the Vienna Festival every year a special strives to create cultural events themselves or shape, connect the highest artistic level with socially relevant content and objectives. The Vienna Festival as an innovative and international urban festival are windows to the international theater world and offer a wide range of contemporary art forms and languages ​​. In the field of tension between tradition and contemporaneity, the program shows productions in all genres: operas, concerts, theater, performances, installations, readings, films.
