Aron Pumnul

Aron Pumnul ( born November 27, 1818 in Cuciulata; † January 24, 1866 in Chernivtsi ) was an Austrian Rumänist.

Life and work

Pumnul grew up in Transylvania. He studied in Blaj and Cluj and in 1843 a high school teacher in Blaj. A scholarship enabled him to further studies in Vienna. As a member of the Romanian Revolution of 1848 in Transylvania, he was forced to flee, went to Czernowitz and was there for the rest of his life, the first teacher of Romanian in the German Gymnasium. His students included Karl Emil Frenchman and Mihai Eminescu.

Pumnul published a Romanian grammar, as well as the first anthology of Romanian literature.

Mihai Eminescu was one of his poems entitled " La mormântul lui Aron Pumnul ". In Chernivtsi and in Cluj -Napoca remember boards, schools and roads to his person.
