Arouquesa cattle

Arouquesa is a cattle breed from Portugal.

Description

The withers of the cows is about 123 cm, which is about 134 cm, the cattle of the breed Arouquesa are the cops so that small animals. The cows reach a weight of 360-430 kg, the bulls are with 700-900 kg significantly heavier. The coat color is light brown, the male animals can be darker. Mucous membranes and claws are dark colored. The sweeping horns should be directed to the front, only down, then facing up.

Properties

Due to their muscular hindquarters Arouquesas are very suitable for mountain and are sometimes still used as draft animals. In the last century ox meat were often exported due to England. 1902 won Arouquesa meat in Paris, the highest award. The finely marbled meat is still most in Portugal. There the animals are considered one of the best native breeds for meat production. They are very durable, 16-18 calves are not uncommon. Occasionally, the cows are milked, but mostly sucking is practiced. The animals are very sociable, but still lively.

Dissemination

The breeding area is limited almost exclusively to the northern Portuguese district of Viseu, Aveiro, Porto and Braga.
