Art Taylor

Art Taylor ( Arthur S. Taylor, Jr., born April 6, 1929 in New York City; † 6 February 1995) was an American jazz drummer.

Taylor played in Harlem with Sonny Rollins and Jackie McLean and had his first major appearances in 1948 with Howard McGhee. It was followed by the collaboration with Coleman Hawkins ( 1950-51 ), Buddy DeFranco (1952 ), Bud Powell (1953 and 1955-57: Bud The Amazing Bud Powell ( Vol. 3) ), Art Farmer ( 1954-55 ) and George Wallington ( 1954-56 ). He also led his own band, Taylor's Wailers, and worked with Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. In 1958 he undertook with Donald Byrd and Bobby Jaspar a European tour.

1963 Taylor went to Europe, where he was during the next twenty years, mainly in France and in 1970 in Belgium, stayed and worked with musicians like Dexter Gordon and Johnny Griffin. From interviews and conversations with fellow musicians here his book Notes and Tones originated. In the early 1990s he returned to the U.S., where he reorganized his band Wailers.

Taylor participated in over three hundred recordings; among others released his own albums Verve, Blue Note and Prestige.
