Arthington (Liberia)

Arthington is a small town in the West African Republic of Liberia. It is located in Montserrado County.

The place Arthington goes back to a generous donation of the English philanthropist Robert Arthington, who had provided out of sympathy for the work of the American Colonization Society, a significant sum to build a settlement in Liberia.

The town lies at the Saint Paul River was founded in 1869 by 79 African Americans from the Bertie County, North Carolina, and was around the year 2000 about 650 inhabitants. The settlers were very successful in the cultivation of sugar cane, coffee and ginger. With their products, they operated the end of the 19th century one of the most successful trading companies in Liberia. The fate and the data of the first generation of settlers are known by genealogical research and have been published.

On the edge of the settlement of the site for the Mount Coffee Dam was found in the 1950s by American geologists and engineers. The hydroelectric power plant supplied to the destruction of the Civil War the majority of the required electric power for the 25 kilometers to the capital Monrovia.

In Arthington 22nd President of Liberia Charles Taylor was born on 28 January 1948.
