Artibonite Department

Artibonite is one of the ten departments of Haiti. It is named after the river Artibonite, which flows into him in the Gulf of Gonâve. It has approximately 1.07 million inhabitants in an area of ​​4984 km ². In addition to the capital city of Gonaïves Saint -Marc is the most important city in Artobonite.

In February 2004, a group of rebels tried unsuccessfully to declare independence Artibonites of Haiti and enforce. In Artibonite, much of the Haitian rice is grown.
