Arturo Vázquez Ayala

Arturo Vázquez Ayala ( born June 26, 1949 in Mexico City) is a former Mexican football player who was usually used as a left defender.

Career

Association

Vázquez Ayala played during his career almost exclusively in his home town: first for nine years ( 1970/71 bis 1978/79 ) for the UNAM Pumas and after five years ( 1980/81 bis 1984/85 ) for the CF Atlante, in which he also let end his active career. In between, he played only one season (1979 /80) outside the capital of Mexico's most popular soccer club Chivas Guadalajara, which is located in the second largest city in Mexico.

National

Vázquez Ayala completed a total of 54 games for the Mexican national football team, where he scored four goals. He made his debut in a friendly against Poland (1:2) on 8 August 1973. His first international goal he scored in a friendly against Yugoslavia ( 5-1 ) on February 1, 1977.

Height of his international playing career was the participation in the Football World Cup 1978, in which he played as captain of his team all the games in full length. In this World Cup, he scored the first goal of the preliminary round Group B in the 45th -minute penalty for 1-0 half-time lead against Tunisia. But in the end lost the match with Mexico 1:3 and became Group Last 2:12 with gates and 0-6 points.
