As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls is a fusion album by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, which was taken in September 1980 by Jan Erik Haug Kong and published in 1981 by ECM.

Background

The music for the album came about after Mays and Metheny had the disastrous Red River Valley tornado in Wichita Falls, Texas, on 10 April 1979 experienced. The tornado, in which 42 people lost their lives and 1,700 were injured caused, alone in Wichita Falls a loss of $ 400 million.

With the title track of the album Mays and Metheny devoted to the Tornado, the first side of the album. Like a tornado wins the music of the twenty minute long piece gradually force.

A highlight of the album is the song " September Fifteenth ", which is dedicated to Bill Evans. The pianist died on this date during the recording of the album. The piece is a quiet and slightly wistful piano and guitar duet.

A piece of the album was chosen in 1988 as background for the TV commercial for Fahrenheit by Christian Dior.

Reception

Steven Cook -reviewed the album at Allmusic, " this is certainly a worthwhile CD for fans ... but is not essential ."

Richard Cook & Brian Morton in the Penguin Guide to Jazz thought succinctly " lot of pastels " and awarded the album only 2 ½ stars.

The album carried out 36 weeks Billboard jazz charts. The title song in 1981 was nominated for a Grammy in the " Best Instrumental Jazz Composition ."
