Ascalenia

Ascalenia is a genus of butterflies of the family splendor butterfly ( Cosmopterigidae ).

Features

The head of the moth is scaly smooth. The sensors are 3/4 for 4/ 5 is so long as the forewing. The sensor base member ( scape ) is short and quite wide. The labial palps are cylindrical and elongated. The forewings are lanceolate and slightly tapered distally. They have a gray-brown ground color and are often provided with dark spots and indistinct lighter patches or bandages. The hind wings are very narrow and less than half as wide as the front wings.

In the male the uncus is long, narrow and curved. The Tegumen is very short and wide. The Valven are strong and sometimes have appendages which are provided with long bristles, hairs or spines. The aedeagus is straight or curved, Cornuti missing.

In females, the apophyses are roughly equal in length. The orifice is located at the front part of the slot-shaped recess of the seventh sternite and the large folding of the trailing edge of the sixth sternite. It is surrounded by rounded or hump-shaped Sklerotisierungen with reticular or needle-like structures. The ductus bursae is narrow to quite wide. It runs in one or more turns, and has a longitudinal sklerotisiertes band. The corpus bursae is round and sometimes covered with comb structures. He has two small funnel-shaped or horn-shaped signals.

Dissemination

The genus is well represented in arid and semi-arid regions of the Old World, for example, in the deserts of North Africa, the Middle East, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Biology

Biology is known only in a few species. The caterpillars bore into the seed pods or branches of Tamariskengewächsen ( Tamaricaceae ) Knöterichgewächsen ( Polygonaceae ), mimosa family ( Mimosaceae ) and Leguminosae ( Fabaceae ). Some species elicit plant galls.
