Ashburton (Devon)

Ashburton is a small market town situated at the edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. The A38 motorway runs right past the place.

Located in the district of Teignbridge Ashburton was once an important center for the management of the tin mines and is the largest town in the National Park with a population of about 3500 inhabitants.

History

During the English Civil War Ashburton was briefly a refuge for royal troops who had fled after their defeat by General Thomas Fairfax near Bovey Tracey. In addition, it was the first place where a candidate of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party was elected to public office. The candidate was Alan Hope, a host of local, who was elected in 1989 in the City Council of Ashburton. He then became Deputy Mayor and later still mayor of the town.
