History

The town was founded in 1891. In the first years of its existence, the production of turpentine and agriculture were the most important economic factors in Ashford. The production of turpentine was meaningless by the spread of oil in the early 20th century for the place and the cultivation of cotton and peanuts was primary source of income, which in the late 20th century, the cultivation of cotton was again largely displaced.
