Ashland is a city in Boyd County in the U.S. state of Kentucky, on the banks of the Ohio with 21,981 inhabitants ( 2000). The metropolitan area has a size of 31.6 km ².

Ashland is a part of Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA ) Huntington - Ashland, which in 2000 had a population of 288 649 inhabitants.

History

The first settlement on the site of the present city, Poage 's Landing, was founded in 1786. She received the current name in 1854. Evolved, in the late 19th century thanks to the steel industry, and later an oil refinery was built. Since 1940, the Federal Prison Federal Correctional Institution, Ashland is located in the city.

Attractions

The cinema building Paramount Arts Center was built in 1931 in Art Deco style and was used until 1971 for film screenings. The building was renovated in 1972 and 2002 and now serves as a cultural center. It is a listed building.
