Asplenium viride

Grünstieliger Spleenwort

The Grünstielige Asplenium Asplenium or Green ( Asplenium viride ) is a fern species, which, apart from the green stalk, very similar to the Braunstieligen Spleenwort ( Asplenium trichomanes ) is.

Description

The narrow lance-shaped fronds of this perennial fern are 5-20 cm long, but usually about 10 cm. They are continuously simply pinnate. The fronds axis is green, and a maximum of brown at the base. The up to 30 rounded to broadly ovate leaflets are flat and arranged on one level.

Distribution and habitat requirements

The species is distributed over the entire Northern Hemisphere in temperate latitudes ( meridional to Arctic zone).

It grows in shady and not too dry locations in columns of calcareous rocks or in crevices of calcareous walls. In Central Europe it is quite common in the limestone areas of the Alps and the Alpine Foreland. Otherwise, it occurs only very isolated and rare.
