The Assamese language ( অসমীয়া, Asamiya, Asamiya, also Assami ) belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-Iranian subgroup of the Indo-European languages .
Assamese is the easternmost of Indo-European languages and is used by at least 15 million (2002) people spoken as a native language, who live mainly in the northeastern Indian state of Assam and some surrounding states, there are also small minorities in Bangladesh and Bhutan. It is written in a modified Bengali font.
History
Assamese Bengali and Oriya is related to close. The three languages evolved from the Magadhi, the eastern dialect of Apabhramsa that followed the Prakrit. The oldest so far discovered texts on Assamese date from the 14th century AD, from the reign of King Durlabhnarayana. The language was heavily influenced by the Tibeto - Burman and Austro-Asiatic languages.
