Assize of Bread and Ale

The English Assize of Bread and Ale, which was enacted in the 13th century, one of the earliest regulations for food safety, and in its design is an important source of food culture of the Middle Ages. For England, this decree is the first control on the production and sale of food.

It regulates in detail the prices bakers and brewers were allowed to take the price of grain in dependence. Its exact date of origin is disputed. However, it is generally Henry III. attributed and would be in the years 1266 and 1267 were written.

The law was only lifted in 1863.
