The Astrolabe Bay ( German " Astrolabebai " ) is a large bay in the Bismarck Sea off the north coast of Papua New Guinea and a natural harbor for the city of Madang. It extends from the Cape Iris in the south to cape Croisilles in the north. It was discovered in 1827 by Jules Dumont d' Urville, and named after his ship Astrolabe. This ship was in turn named after another, the Astrolabe of the lost French explorer Jean -François de La Pérouse. The astrolabe, after which the vessels are named Astrolabe, an instrument for navigation at sea.

During the German colonial period, for German New Guinea Friedrich- Wilhelms- port ( Madang, central administration of New Guinea 's Company ), Konstantin port (another station of Guinea 's Company ), Stephansort (Station of Astrolabekompanie ) and Prince Henry harbor important places.
