Asulam is a chemical compound from the group of carbamates and a selective against ferns and sorrel acting herbicide. The effect is based on the inhibition of dihydropteroate synthase.

Production and representation

Asulam can be obtained with methyl chloroformate to urethanes and saponification of the Acetamides with sodium hydroxide solution by multi-stage reaction by chlorosulfonation of acetanilide with chlorosulfonic acid, conversion of the sulfonyl chloride with ammonia to sulfonamide, further reaction.

Admission

Asulam was 1971-1992 approved in Germany as a herbicide. The active substance asulam is not approved in the European Union for use in plant protection products. In Germany and Austria no plant protection products containing this active ingredient are allowed in Switzerland products for use against ferns and sorrel are available.
