Atanasie Rednic

Atanasie Rednic OSBM (* February 18, 1722 in Giuleşti, county Máramaros, Grand Principality of Transylvania; † May 2, 1772 in Blaj ) was a Romanian Greek- Catholic Bishop of Fagaras.

Life

Atanasie Rednic went in 1734 to study philosophy at the Jesuit Colleg in Cluj. In 1738 he began a novitiate in the monastery of the Basilian Mukachevo St. Jehoshaphat; went back to Cluj, and continued his studies, in 1743, he studied theology in Vienna; In 1747 he returned to his monastery. After taking the vows he was ordained in 1749 for religious priests. 1750-1751 he accompanied Bishop Petru Pavel Aron in his visitations. In 1754 he became Prefect of the newly established seminary in Blasendorf.

After the death of Bishop Petru Pavel Aron on January 27, 1764, he was nominated in the autumn of the same year as his successor. He traveled to deliver the nomination in person to Vienna by Empress Maria Theresa. On April 22, 1765, the appointment as Bishop of Fagaras by the imperial court was. On May 15, 1765, Pope Clement XIII. this appointment. He was consecrated on November 13, 1765 in his home monastery by the Titular Bishop of Rhosus and Greek Catholic Apostolic Vicar of Mukachevo, Mihály Emánuel Olsavszky OSBM. Atanasie Rednic was solemnly installed in his diocese on April 14 in 1766. He negotiated in Vienna to improve the life of the priest, he received support 10,000 guilders cash to the needy. He reformed the monasteries in Blasendorf and Karl castle, sent the monks to support the clergy in the ministry, gave them sales opportunities their print products, ceramics, candles and tailoring. He left the seminary to develop young men to lead to the priesthood. He ordered the priests to wear the cassock.

Bishop Atanasie Rednic died on 2 May 1772 and was buried in the Episcopal vault in the cemetery in Blaj.
