Atlas of Mauretania

Atlas of Mauritania is a mythical king, who appears as a wise judge of the stars and their spherical shape in Diodorus.

This scientific aspect of the Atlas mythology explained Gerhard Mercator in the preface to his 1595 posthumously published Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura (Atlas or kosmografische Meditations on the creation of the world and the shape of creation). Atlas of Mauritania was thus the namesake of the atlases in cartography.

Atlas of Mauritania is in the sagas surrounding the Titan Atlas and the Royal Atlas of Atlantis.
