Auberive

Auberive is a commune with 194 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute -Marne, in the Champagne -Ardenne region; it belongs to the district of Langres and the Canton Auberive. She is a member of the Association of Municipalities Communauté de communes des Quatre Vallées (Haute- Marne).

Geography

The town lies on the river Aube, whose source is located a few kilometers to the south.

The monastery Auberive ( Ripa Alba ) is a former Cistercian abbey, founded in 1136 by Bernard of Clairvaux, 1791 and 1856 was resolved at a women's prison. Today the building is used for exhibitions.

Personalities

Louise Michel, the "Red Virgin " of the Paris Commune was in the Abbey Auberive - held captive before she was deported to New Caledonia - then the women's prison.
