Aubignas

Aubignas is a commune of 440 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in Ardèche, in the Rhône -Alpes. The inhabitants are called Aubignassiens and Aubignassiennes.

Geography

Aubignas located in the hinterland of the Rhone, the massif of the Cevennes joins the north and east of the community of. The municipality borders the neighboring municipalities Le Teil and Alba -la -Romaine. The nearest major town is in Montelimar ten kilometers southeast.

History

The discovery of fossils shows that the place was inhabited since the Stone Age. In ancient times, there was already a Roman Vorsiedlung named Alba Ignea, probably in the possession of the wealthy citizen Albinus. 1275, the village was first mentioned under the name Albinacium.

In the 14th century, the administrator of Adhemar granted the citizens the duty exemption on their property. End of the 16th century, the Protestants of Villeneuve -de-Berg conquered the fortified village. Traces of ancient consolidation system are still visible today.

Culture and sights

Aubignas is an old, picturesque village with the remains of the city walls, an arched gate and maze of streets. At the entrance is a staircase over the roofs of the houses that line the ancient fortress used. The Romanesque church from the 11th century is known for its decorated with alveoli apse.

The best views of the town can be enjoyed from Plateau du Coiron, an old limestone rocks.
