Le Teil

Le Teil is a municipality with 8103 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in southern France in Ardèche, in the Rhône -Alpes. Its inhabitants are called Teillois and Teilloises.

Geography

Le Teil is located on the right bank of the Rhone, in the Bas Vivarais east of the Plateau du Coiron. The nearest major city is Montelimar three miles away to the east.

History

Le Teil developed as a village around a castle built in the 13th century, which was destroyed in 1634 at the instigation of Cardinal Richelieu. Through its port on the Rhone, the place was an important trading center for commodities. A first bridge over the river was built in the 19th century, the current bridge is the fourth and dates from the year 1945.

Le Teil has concluded partnerships with Raunheim in Hesse and the Italian community Trofarello in Piedmont.
