August Ahlborn

August Wilhelm Julius Ahlborn ( born October 11, 1796 in Hannover, † August 24, 1857 in Rome ) was a German landscape painter of the 19th century.

Life and work

Ahlborn was the son of the Hanoverian master tailor Heinrich Christian Ahlborn and Dorothea Elisabeth Röllecke. In December 1832 he went to Berlin, the marriage with Therese, the daughter of the upper mountain Council Martin. The marriage remained childless. Ahlborn occurred in 1819 in the Academy of Arts (Berlin) a. Here he studied under Karl Wilhelm Wach. In 1826 he received the Academy Award for the portrait of the New Palace in Potsdam and could do with the money to travel to Italy. In 1833 he became a member of the Academy. In 1827 he went to Italy. Here he was one of the founders of the Roman Kunstverein. He lived in Rome, Florence and Ascoli. In Italy Ahlborn converted on August 15, 1837 along with his wife, to Roman Catholicism. His images are mainly Italian, North German and Tyrolean landscapes, but also some religious works. Many of his works were in the possession of the royal family of Prussia.
