August Closs

August Closs ( born August 9, 1898 in Neumarkt in Steiermark, † June 21 1990 in Bristol ) was an Austrian literary critic.

After he had moved to Bristol in 1924, Closs received in 1931 a professor of German literature at the university, which he held until 1964. He was also a visiting professor in Canada, the USA, India, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands. Closs co-founded in 1947 closed twinning between Hannover and Bristol and was until his death as a supporter of the same. For his services in this area, he was made an honorary citizen of the Technical University of Hanover (1950) and the University of Bristol ( 1989), support the Hanoverian city sticker ( 1962), Knight of the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1964 ) and an honorary citizen of the city of Hannover ( 1987).
