August Mälk

August Mälk ( born October 4, 1900 Kipi village, today rural community Lümanda, Saaremaa Island, Estonia, † December 19, 1987 in Stockholm, Sweden ) was an Estonian writer.

Life

August Mälk was born the son of a farmer on the island of Saaremaa. He attended from 1910 to 1915 the village school in Koovi that Ministerialschule in Lümanda and the town school in the island's capital, Kuressaare. Subsequently, he was from 1916 to 1935 worked as a teacher and headmaster in Torgu, Mõntu and Lümanda. From 1923 to 1925 he studied English and Education at the University of Tartu.

1926 debuted August Mälk literary with the amendment Surnu surm in the anthology Aktsioon, the young Estonian writer imagined. In the same year his first novel Kesaliblik, which, however, still little attention was paid appeared. 1929 Mälk became a member of the Estonian Writers' Union. From 1936 he devoted himself as a freelance writer to literature.

1933 married Mälk the teacher Pauline Triipan ( 1904-1986 ). In 1936, the only child of the couple, the daughter Elna Halliki born.

In the 1930s, August Mälk was also politically active. In 1937 he was a member of the Estonian National Assembly ( Rahvuskogu ), which should work out a new Estonian Constitution. From 1938 until the Soviet occupation of Estonia in June 1940 was Mälk member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Riigivolikogu ) of the Estonian Parliament. In 1937 he was awarded by the Estonian Head of State Konstantin Pats for his literary merits of the court Lagle on the outskirts of Tallinn given.

1944 August Mälk fled from the Red Army to Sweden, where he lived in exile until the end of life. From 1945 to 1982 he was chairman of the Estonian Association of Writers Abroad ( Välismaine Eesti Kirjanike Liit ), which had been founded in 1945 in Stockholm. Until his death Mälk remained its honorary chairman.

From 1948 to 1972 Mälk worked as a librarian at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. In the Swedish capital he died in 1987. He was buried at the Stockholm Skogskyrkogården.

Literary work

August Mälk was from the mid-1930s as one of the most respected Estonian writer. His breakthrough achieved in 1935 with the novel Õitsev meri ( 1935 German The flourishing sea, 1949), the first part of a trilogy that palge with Taeva all (1937, German In the face of Heaven, 1940) and Hea sadam (1942; German The good harbor, 1947) took their continuation.

Especially for his depictions of life at sea, and his descriptions of the people of Saaremaa August Mälk has become famous. Also during his time in exile remained Mälk of Estonian literature faithful.
