August Prinzhofer

August Prinzhofer ( born September 12, 1816 in St. Veit an der Glan, † August 4, 1885 in Bad Steinerhof in Vienna) was an Austrian painter and lithographer.

Life

August Prinzhofer comes from a long-established Carinthian family as a child and showed an amazing talent for drawing. He studied law in Vienna and Padua. From 1844, he was active in Vienna at a civil court, next he was also active as a successful portraitist. In 1854 he gave up his legal career to devote himself to portraiture.

Besides Joseph Kriehuber, Franz Eduard Kaiser eybl and he was one of the artists responsible for the flowering of the portrait lithograph in Vienna in the years 1830 - 1860 were responsible.

His lithographic work longer includes about 500 portraits (including Hector Berlioz, Ludwig von Benedek, Ignaz Franz Castelli, Archduke Johann, Lajos Kossuth, Albert Lortzingstraße, Alois Negrelli, Pius IX. , Johann Ladislaus Pyrker, Johann Nestroy ).

In the 1850s, photography was becoming more widespread and the portrait lithograph came in 1860 completely out of fashion. 1861 took Prinzhofer his permanent residence in Graz and devoted himself increasingly to this oil portrait and watercolor miniatures.
