Eduard Kaiser

Eduard Kaiser ( born February 22, 1820 Graz, † August 30, 1895 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter and lithographer.

Life

Edward was a son of Emperor Franz Joseph Kaiser, owner of a lithographic Institute in Graz. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Joseph Danhauser. Soon he was a serious contender for the then Vienna's main maestro of portrait lithograph Josef Kriehuber.

In 1848 he joined, excited by the freedom ideals of the revolution, the academic legion. During this time he painted almost all the major personalities of the March Revolution (Josef Radetzky, Franz Schuselka, Hans Adolf Kudlich Fischhof, Carl Giskra ). 1852/53 he lived in Rome. After his return, he developed a very productive activity as Porträtlithograf ( Emperor Franz Joseph I, Empress Elisabeth, Friedrich Hebbel, Robert Schumann and Clara Schumann).

1867-1886 he lived again in Rome, where he devoted himself with great success watercolor reproduction of the classic masterpieces. These reproductions were sold in England as color lithographs. After his return to Vienna, he went back to portrait painting, both in oil and watercolor.

His brother Alexander Kaiser (1819-1872) was also a painter and lithographer.
