Augusta is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas, specifically in Butler County, at the confluence of the two rivers Walnut River and Whitewater River. The last census in 2000 showed 8,423 inhabitants. The nearest major town is Wichita With 350,000 inhabitants, 40 km west of Augusta.

The city covers an area of 11.4 km ², of which 1.0 km ² water surfaces. Augusta is on average 390 m above sea level.

Named was the place to Augusta James, wife of CN James, who built a trading post at this point.

Demography

Data obtained from the census in 2000 8.423 inhabitants of Augusta lived in 3,277 households; among them were 2,307 families. The population density was 807 per km ². In place 3,585 residential units were recorded. Among the population was 96.1 % White, 0.2% African American, 0.8 % American Indian, 0.4 % Asian and 0.7 % of other ethnic groups; 1.9 % reported belonging to several ethnic groups.

Among the 3,277 households 35.7 % had children under the age of 18; 26.3% were single-person households. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size 3.06.

The population was spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.9% 25-44 years, 19.4% from 45 to 64 years and 15.7 % of 65 years or older. The median age was 35 years.
