Auguste Champetier de Ribes

Auguste Champetier de Ribes ( born July 30, 1882 in Antony, † March 6, 1947 in Paris) was a French lawyer and politician.

As a devout Catholic, he joined early on in the movement of Albert de Mun. After his participation in the First World War, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as a member of the Christian Democratic Parti populaire démocrate (PDP ) for the department of Basses- Pyrénées, to which he belonged from 1924 to 1934. From 1934 to 1940 he was a member of the Senate and was under André Tardieu, Édouard Daladier, Paul Reynaud and Pierre Laval Minister.

De Ribes was one of the 80 MPs who voted on July 10, 1940 against the establishment of the Vichy regime. After the capitulation of France he joined the Resistance. After the war, Charles de Gaulle ordered him to participate as representatives of France in the process of Nuremberg.

After the end of the process, he was elected President of the Senate because of his seniority. He took part in the presidential election in 1947 as the candidate of the MRP. For health reasons, it was then no longer possible for him to take up his post as Senate President again.
