Augusto da Costa

Da Costa ( born October 22, 1920 in Rio de Janeiro, † March 1, 2004 ibid ) Augusto Augusto often called, was a Brazilian football player. He was captain of the Brazilian national football team at the FIFA World Cup 1950 in Brazil. He was born in Rio de Janeiro and began his career in 1936 at São Cristóvão there he remained until 1944. 1945 he joined the club CR Vasco da Gama in, in which he remained until 1954.

For the Brazilian national team, he played 20 times and scored one goal. He won the Copa América 1949 and led his team as a captain in the playoff for the World Cup 1950. Though Brazil was considered a big favorite in Maracanastadion had home advantage and only a draw needed, you lost against Uruguay, and was only vice-champion. This game is also known as Maracanaço.
