Augustus Quirinus Rivinus

August Quirinus Rivinus, actually Bachmann, ( born December 9, 1652 Leipzig, † December 20, 1723 in Leipzig) was a German physician, botanist and astronomer. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Riv. ".

Life

His father Andreas Rivinus (1601-1656) was professor of philosophy and medicine in Leipzig. He was also known as Neo-Latin poet. He called himself Latinized Rivinus.

August Quirinus Rivinus studied medicine at the University of Leipzig ( among others, Michael Ettmüller, Gottfried Welsch, and John Bohn ). In 1670 he was of Arts Bachelor of Philosophy, Master in 1671. He continued his studies at the University of Helmstedt, where he received his doctorate in 1676 for Dr. med. Then Rivinus worked as a general practitioner in Leipzig. He was also a lecturer from 1677, from 1688 a member of the medical faculty. From 1691 he was professor of physiology and botany, in 1701 professor of pathology and later professor of therapy and director of the Botanical Garden at the University of Leipzig.

Services

Rivinus provided a plant system, in which the corolla is regarded as differentiating feature. He joined the rest of the morphological and terminological principles of the philosopher and botanist Joachim Jungius and widespread idea of ​​a binary nomenclature. He demanded that the genus name be called in any kind of specific species name and have to follow it as an adjective. However, he considered himself in his work on plant systematics NOT sent to this claim.

Rivinus published a number of medical, botanical and astronomical work. A compilation of his works was published under the title Dissertatione medicae diversis Temporibus habitae, nunc vero in unum fasciculum collectae 1710 in Leipzig.

As a result of his observations to the sun spots he was the last ten years of his life blind.

Honors

On November 30, 1703, he was elected as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society.

Charles Plumier named in his honor the plant genus Rivina from the plant family of Pokeweed ( Phytolaccaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name. Also, the epithet of the Hain - violet ( Viola riviniana Reichenb. ) Was named after Rivinus.
