Aurélien Sauvageot

Aurélien Sauvageot ( born April 13, 1897 in Constantine Opel, † December 5, 1988 in Aix -en- Provence) was a French Finnougrist, linguist and philologist.

Life and work

Sauvageot, who was a child of Turkish and Greek in contact, was launched in October 1918 as a student of the Ecole Normale at the direction of Antoine Meillet to the study of Finno- Ugric languages ​​to Uppsala and from there from June to October 1919 After Finland ( to Eemil Nestor Setälä ), and finally from 1923 to 1931 studied to Hungary, where he taught at the Eotvos Lorand University in French and Hungarian Zoltán Gombocz. In Paris, he defended the two documents Recherches sur le vocabulaire des langues ouralo - altaïques (Budapest 1929) and L' Emploi de l'article en gotique (Paris 1929) and occupied from 1931 to 1967 at the Ecole nationale des langues orientales the first chair for Finno-Ugric languages ​​in France. Between 1941 and 1943, the Vichy regime removed him from his chair, but had to use him to pressure the Finnish and Hungarian Embassy in February 1943 again. During his removal, he was accepted at the Hungarian Institute and worked as a translator from Finnish and Hungarian. In 1979 he became an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was also a foreign member of the Academy of Finland. A lecture hall of the Budapest Eotvos Lorand University bears his name.
