Australian Atomic Energy Commission

In November 1952, the Australian Atomic Energy Commission ( AAEC ) was created after the passage of the Atomic Energy Act by the Australian Parliament, which replaced the Australian Energy Policy Commission. The AAEC should advise the government on matters of nuclear policy. In addition to advising the government 's own research in the Lucas Heights were operated in a suburb in Sydney from the AAEC. The AAEC was involved in the establishment of the International Atomic Energy Agency on 29 July 1957. Furthermore AAEC also installed an investigation program to enrich uranium and advised the government in the construction of the nuclear power station at Jervis Bay. This organization was also involved in the development of the Ranger uranium mine.

In 1981, parts of the AAEC split in the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and 1987 the AAEC was incorporated in the State Administration Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation.

The AAEC was involved in the construction of the research reactor HIFAR from the beginning of January 1958, which was operated by the replacement of a light water reactor Open Pool Australian Light Water Reactor ( OPAL ) in January 2007. The same applies to the reactor at Lucas Heights Moata, which went into operation on April 10, 1961 and was shut down on 31 May 1995.

Fall within the remit of the AAEC research in the fields of radiochemistry, neutron scattering, sodium cooling systems, beryllium moderators, development of gas turbines, radiation protection and therapy, the environment, the method of hot isostatic pressing, MLIS and AVLIS.
