Australian Maritime College

The Australian Maritime College ( AMC) is an institute of the University of Tasmania in Launceston. It is Australia's national center for marine research and education.

The objectives of the AMC are the provision of further education, training and consulting of the highest quality and the operation of research in the maritime area of international standard.

AMC to include two 50 km away from each other offices in northern Tasmania, in Newham and Beauty Point, each with different facilities.

AMC provides the following three groups:

  • Seafarer
  • Academics in the field of marine research
  • Sailors for the Pacific Patrol Boat Program
  • 2.1 Endeavour Hall

Newham Campus

The main campus of the AMC is situated in Newham, six kilometers from Launceston. The Institute's administration and the faculty sea transportation and engineering sciences are here. Among others, here also the towing tank, a ship hull test pool and a cavitation tunnel.

Investigator Hall

The Investigator Hall is a dormitory for students of the AMC as well as for students of the University of Tasmania. It was named after the ship of Matthew Flinders, the HMS Investigator.

Beauty Point Campus

On Beauty Point Campus is the national center for ports and shipping. In addition. Here are a water flow channel ( where it burned in 2008 ), laboratories for seafood, microbiology and chemistry as well as research facilities for students.

Endeavour Hall

The Endeavour Hall is the residence of the AMC at the Beauty Point campus. It was named after the ship HMS Endeavour of James Cook.

The Australian Maritime College maintains an own fleet of ships. The ships include:

  • RV Stephen Brown

Project Unity

The AMC and the University of Tasmania, which are represented both at the Newham campus, started the project Unity. This project investigated whether a combination of the two institutions is meaningful.

On October 16, 2007, the Maritime Amendment Bill was approved, which decided the integration of the AMC as an institute within the University of Tasmania. The AMC, however, still retains its own identity and a degree of autonomy.
