Autocomplete

Autocomplete (English AutoCompletion ) is a function that adds a user input makes sense. Basis for the completion is in any case a limited pool of possibilities, the equivalent reduces towards the progress and possibly semantics of user input. It is provided by many editors, integrated development environments, or Web applications. There are different ways of realization:

  • By drop-down list,
  • By displaying a possible text
  • By the immediate insertion of a template text
  • By repeated branching with clear completion

Examples include methods such as text on 9 keys (T9 ) when writing SMS messages or input method editors, speed dials in the address book, additions of previous inputs ( as in search bar, see Proposal search), autocomplete in Office products where it depending on program will include dates, or words of completion or tab-completion in the command line, as is the case with some operating systems. The branching method shows in advance of the next -to-type characters with unique continuation and thus corresponds to the look-up in a Rolodex file.

In integrated development environments support a syntactic and semantic verification of the source code already entered the programmer with a list of suggestions for autocompletion. This list of proposals includes source code, for example, previously declared variables accessible in the program context methods, functions, and objects to extensive templates of commonly used pieces of code (templates). Microsoft refers to the auto-complete function of the Visual Studios here as IntelliSense.

Legal situation in Germany

The Bundesgerichtshof ( BGH) has on 14 May 2013, a judgment on the so-called AutoComplete feature announced (AZ VI ZR 269/12 ). Google has this feature since 2009.

A contractor had sued Google. He looked through automatically added search suggestions in his personal rights and hurt his business reputation. The searches were in command of his full name, the auto completion ' Scientology ' and ' fraud ', even though it bears no relation with Scientology or his fraud was to blame. He got right so that Google is obligated in the future to prevent such searches. This decision also has an impact on Bettina Wulff's lawsuit against Google. The Supreme Court judges have repealed their judgment an otherwise sound judgment of the Higher Regional Court. This must now renegotiate partly the case. Also in other countries there were judgments against Google.
