Automuseum Dr. Carl Benz

The Auto Museum Dr. Carl Benz is dedicated to the inventor of the automobile, Carl Benz. The focus of the private collection of Winfried A. Seidel is brand vehicles Benz, C. Benz Söhne and Mercedes -Benz. The museum is a few years ago moved to the historic factory complex of C. Benz Söhne in Ladenburg.

The museum is located in the west of Ladenburg am Neckar directly on the Bertha Benz Memorial Route.

History of the collection

The classic car collector Winfried A. Seidel has devoted almost his entire life to the Benz. Early on, he was fascinated by old cars, and he continued his passion for collecting and during his time as President of the Mercedes -Benz Classic Car Club of Germany (MVC ) and the organizer of the classic car show Veterama continued. Today, the collection includes some 80 vehicles and countless documents that document the history of Carl Benz and his family.

History of the building

After Carl Benz invented the automobile in 1886 had Mannheimer square T6, was found in the sequence after a plot with expansion possibilities. As he knew Ladenburg of his test drives ago, he acquired the property in 1905 in Ladenburg.

In 1906, he founded the company with his son Eugen C. Benz Söhne 1908 came his second son Richard joined the company. Until the 1920s, some 300 vehicles were produced in the newly built factory buildings. The last two copies left Benz assemble for their own use. These vehicles still exist today and are in the museum.

The historical Benz factory experienced after an eventful history. During the war years cartridge cases were made for the final victory. As Zylinderschleiferei and radiator repair you served the regional engine rebuilders. After that, the company C. Benz Söhne has established as a supplier of the division Mercedes -Benz commercial vehicles.

In 2004 Winfried A. Seidel acquired the factory grounds, and with the support of Mercedes -Benz, it was possible to restore the historic factory buildings and remodel the museum. It is probably unique in that a vehicle museum has returned to the halls where once issued today automobiles were built.

The exhibition

In five areas, the history of the engine is shown from the Benz patent motor car to the McLaren - Mercedes Formula 1 race car. Moreover, one can also take a look at the original tools of Carl Benz which are constructed in the museum workshop.

Area 1

Right at the entrance is the Dr. Carl Benz Square. The vehicles shown here all come from the production of Benz & Cie.. in Mannheim and of the company C. Benz Söhne in Ladenburg. At the start of the engine in 1886 was the three-wheeled motor vehicle with the patent number 37435, and the last model of the Benz 10/35 hp vehicle was built by Benz in 1925. Here are the last two existing vehicles of C. Benz Söhne brand.

Area 2

In the Mercedes Avenue vehicles are shown, which were produced by the merger of the companies of Daimler Benz and Daimler- Benz AG in 1926 until the early fifties. In addition, you can learn here, as the brand name Mercedes was born.

Area 3

The auto - biography is demonstrated in 30 luminous pyramids, the whole is supplemented by vehicles from the respective eras, such as a Mercedes -Benz with wooden generator.

Area 4

Here you can see the two-wheeled history. From the wheel of the Karl -Friedrich Drais to Sauerbronn who kicked by Mannheim in 1817, on the first bicycles with pedals, to the colorful scooters in the fifties.

Area 5

In the racing division race cars are from different eras. The spectrum ranges from Avus race cars from 1921 right through to Formula 1 car of McLaren -Mercedes in 2001 ( Mika Hakkinen ). Also an original Sauber-Mercedes -Benz C291, the Michael Schumacher drove is issued.

Special (since 2010)

The Benz patent motor car number 3, with high probability the original vehicle with which Bertha Benz from Mannheim to Pforzheim and back recoiled, can be seen currently on permanent loan to the London Science Museum in Ladenburg. Thus the oldest preserved original car in the world has returned to Ladenburg.
