The Autonomous University of Barcelona (Catalan: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spanish: Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona) is a university near the Spanish city of Barcelona. It was founded on June 6, 1968 and focuses its activities on campus Bella Terra in a circle Vallès Occidental, 30 kilometers from the city center of Barcelona. Other facilities of the University exist in Manresa, Sabadell, Terrassa, Sant Cugat del Vallès and Barcelona. The Vila Universitaria, a gated community with 812 apartments, in which 2,193 people can be accommodated, is located directly on campus, well connected to train and motorway, just 25 minutes from the center of Barcelona. History and Profile

The Autonomous State University of Barcelona was founded on June 6, 1968 passage of a law. Even before there was during the Second Spanish Republic plans for a second university in Barcelona, but due to the civil war and the subsequent years of poverty in the early years of the Franco dictatorship could not be realized.

On 6 October the same year, the first lecture of the Faculty of Humanities in Sant Cugat del Vallès Monastery was held in October and also the Faculty of Medicine at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau was established in Barcelona. The land on which the campus is today, were acquired in 1969 and after several years of construction work, the vast majority of faculties of the University are housed there.

With the end of the dictatorship, the University introduced the so-called " Bellaterra Manifesto " in front of their plan for a democratic, independent university model.

From 1985 to 1992, several organizational reforms were carried out and founded a number of new faculties.

The university has 54 departments, which are broadly divided into four areas: health sciences, natural sciences and technology, humanities and social sciences.
