Avellaneda Department, Río Negro

The department Avellaneda is north of the Río Negro Province in southern Argentina and is one of 13 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the province of La Pampa, to the east by the department of Pichi Mahuida, in the southeast on the department Conesa, to the south the departments of San Antonio, and Nueve de Julio Valcheta and to the west by the departments of El Cuy and General Roca.

The capital of the department of Avellaneda is Choele Choel. The town, located on the waterfront opposite the Isla Grande de Choele Choel, is an important transportation hub. Here the Ruta Nacional 22 and the Ruta Provincial 250, which is connected to the island tick. A bus terminal for long distance buses and an airport which currently handles only private air traffic, underline the importance of the transport center. A railway line connecting Buenos Aires with San Carlos de Bariloche, happens outside of the river valley, the place Darwin. Except for occasional freight trains traffic is set to this line, however, at the time.

Geography

The department Avellaneda is drained by the Río Negro, whose running a fertile valley has created, called in this section Valle Medio. Due to the division of the river into two branches, which continue to flow later united again, resulting in a range of river islands, the largest of the Isla Grande de Choele Choel and Isla Chica de Choele Choel are. The Isla Grande is the most fertile area of the department in which, inter alia, Tomatoes, apples and pears are produced. The villages on the island are called Luis Beltrán, Lamarque and Pomona.

The department Avellaneda is divided into municipalities ( municipios ) Chimpay, Choele Choel, Coronel Belisle, Darwin, Lamarque, Luis Beltrán, Pomona, the Comisión de Fomento Chelforó and the small settlements ( Parajes ) ​​Colonia Josefa, Fortin Uno and La Japonesa.
