Avenay-Val-d'Or

Avenay -Val- d'Or is a commune in the Marne department in the Champagne- Ardenne region. It belongs to the district of the canton of Epernay and Ay. Avenay -Val- d'Or is a member of the Communauté de communes de la Grande Vallée de la Marne.

History

Avenay has been inhabited since Roman times. The Holy Bertha von Avenay, which was according to tradition, by marriage with the family of the Merovingians, was founded here in the year 660, the Benedictine Avenay, which was completely demolished during the French Revolution.

Attractions

The Church of St. Trésain whose current architecture dates from the 13th to 16th centuries, contains relics and works of art of the former abbey.

Personalities

Avenay -Val- d'Or is home to the medievalists Paulin Paris (1800-1881) and his son Gaston Paris (1839-1903), both members of the Collège de France, Gaston Paris and member of the Académie française.
