Avenel is a settlement and census-designated place within the town of Woodbridge in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. In the 2010 census 17,011 inhabitants were registered.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 9.0 km ², of which 8.9 km ² of land and 0.1 km ² (0.58 %) is water.

According to the census of 2000, there are 17,552 people, 5,233 households, and 3,799 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,970.0 inhabitants per km ². 53.52 % of the population are White, 19.66 % African American, 0.35 % Native American, 18.90 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander, 3.65 % from other races, and 3.89% mixed race. 9.85% are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
