Edward Irving Wortis ( born December 23, 1937 in New York, NY) is an American author of children 's books. His pseudonym is Avi.

Life

Edward Irving Wortis was born in 1937 along with his twin sister Emily Wortis Unfortunately ( also writer ) in New York City. His father Joseph Wortis was a psychiatrist and his mother Helen Zunser Wortis was a social worker. He grew up in Brooklyn, where his family moved a year after his birth. His sister gave him the nickname as a child, Avi, he then later adopted as a pseudonym.

His grandfathers were both writers, his grandmother a playwright. In interviews, he remembered that his mother him and his sister has read every night and that he Fridays always went to the public library. His brother Henry was considered a genius; he already was 15 years old at a university and later became a scientist. Irving Wortis is the cousin of actor and Oscar Award-winner Alan Arkin.

After Irving Wortis failed at Stuyvesant High School, his parents sent him to the small private Elisabeth Irwin High School. There he met with his tutor Ella Ratner, who he claims to owe his later literary success with. It turned out that he had a Agrafiesymptom, so he spelled words wrong or twisted.

He worked in various manual trades, but was incidentally a writer. Initially, only when the playwright active, he later wrote for his own children. He has published several children 's books for all ages and is now one of the most famous authors of children's and youth literature.

After having lived in the 1980s and 1990s in Providence (Rhode Iceland ), Avi now lives with his wife Linda Cruise Wright in Denver (Colorado).

Avi is a very prolific author create. He has written over 60 books for various ages and in many different genres. Perhaps his most famous books fall into the category of historical novel.
