Avrig

Avrig ( German Freck; Hungarian Felek ) is a town in the district of Sibiu in Transylvania, Romania.

Position of the settlement

Avrig is located on the Olt (German Alt) - which is dammed in the vicinity of the place - on the European road 68, 27 km south-east of Sibiu ( Hermannstadt) in the direction of Braşov (Kronstadt).

The place is located at the foot of the Fagaras Mountains ( Fagaras Mountains).

History

The village probably founded in the 12th century by the Saxons Freck was first documented in 1364. Freck belonged until 1878 to Sibiu chair, then to the Sibiu County.

Mid-18th century began the construction of a baroque castle, which as Brukenthal'sche summer residence gained notoriety later.

By glazing industry the place from the 19th century grew rapidly and attained the rank of a city in 1989.

Traffic

Avrig has railway connections to Fagaras and Sibiu. This is interrupted, however, since a flood in Porumbacu de Jos. Since 2004, the city has a ring road to the north of the populated area leads to transit traffic of heavy traffic DN 1 over.
