Axel Graatkjær

Axel Graatkjær ( born Axel Sørensen, born January 19, 1885 † 13 November 1969 in Aarhus ) was a Danish cinematographer.

Life

He started in 1906 as an employee of Nordisk Films Kompagni of Ole Olsen and was an integral cameraman of the numerous short films by Viggo Larsen, including the successful lion hunt in Ellore (1907). In 1910 he changed his name Axel Sørensen " Graatkjær ". With August Blom Graatkjær turned the sequel, the slave trade hvide (1910 /11), ballet dancer with Asta Nielsen in the lead role and an early film version of Hamlet (1911 ).

1913 Graatkjær went to Berlin, where he was behind the camera for all Asta Nielsen films by Urban Gad to 1916. He has worked several times with his colleague Karl Freund together. He came in contact with important German directors and filmed among others Richard Oswald, Carl Froelich, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Leopold Jessner, Robert Wiene and Paul Czinner.

With the beginning of the sound era Graatkjærs career ended in 1930 and he returned to Denmark.
