Axel Paulsen

Axel Paulsen ( born July 18, 1855 in Kristiania ( now Oslo ), Norway, † 1938) was a figure skater and inventor of the most difficult figure skating jumps, which is named after him - the Axel.

As a 16 - year-old boy he was at the competitions in Christiania in 1870 to a large surprise. 15 years later he was awarded the title of the best athlete in the world ( engl. Champion of the World). Meanwhile, he had enrolled in several competitions in figure skating history.

But the most famous himself into a particularly difficult jump, he jumped on the speed skating skids and he still is one of the most difficult jumps in figure skating. At the first international figure skating competitions that took place in Vienna in 1882, but it did not help it to victory. He was only third behind the Austrians Leopold Frey and Eduard Engelmann.

Nowadays the exception skater known only as figure skaters, but the inventor of one of the most serious figure skating jumps triumphed over long runners. Hundred English miles ( 160.9 km ) he went in 9:30 hours. The first European he went to America, where he defeated the best speed skaters of Canada and the United States in a ten- mile run.
