Axenstrasse

The Axenstrasse on the main road connecting the two Swiss villages wells and Flüelen along the eastern bank of Lake Uri called southern portion of Lake Lucerne. It leads through the village located in the canton of Uri Sisikon.

The building received its name because it at Axen (also Axenberg ) along leads, the Lake Uri facing side of the Alps mountain Rophaien. The two-lane main street is part of the Swiss national road network 3rd class has the number N4 and is connected at both ends with the A4. Large parts of the road pass through tunnels or rockfall galleries.

Parallel to the road passes the dual route of the Gotthard railway, which belongs to the Swiss Federal Railways. In Altdorf, the main road branches to the Gotthard road that follows the Reuss Valley, and the Klausen Pass road.

History

The construction of the road was possible until 1861, after sufficient debt for the company was collected and the Swiss military had spoken with Guillaume -Henri Dufour at the top of the building. Previously had to be loaded onto ships for transport over the Gotthard Pass in this section, all persons and goods. The section Sisikon -Flüelen opened in 1864, the section Sisikon Fountain 1865. Since then the road has been repeatedly re- expanded and moved to tunnel.

Early as 1880, promoted the Gotthardpost more than 61,000 travelers on the Axenstrasse, the Uri valley and over the pass. The Axenstrasse was charge you until the year 1928.

Again and again plunge masses of rock from time to avalanches, on the Axenstrasse. Mid-1980s, the road was interrupted by a large broken rocks for several months, so Sisikon was only connected by train or ship with the rest of the canton of Uri. The early 1990s threatened on the Schwyzer section a rock outcrop to pounce on the road. After the construction of Flüeler tunnel, a 2.6 km long bypass tunnel, opened on 10 June 2005 after six years of construction, the rock was controlled blown up and crashed into pieces shattered into the Lake of Uri.

According to the Federal Office for Roads Authority by 2025 Axenstrasse be expanded in several stages in the years 2011. Sisikon is relieved by a 4.4 kilometer tunnel from through traffic. The 2.8 km long tunnel leads from Morsch Acher Ingenbohl by location. By expanding the Axenstrasse is also better protected against falling rocks and other forces of nature.
