Ayatana
The Eighteen Elements is a term from Buddhist psychology and describe the conditions for perception and conscious processes. The eighteen elements ( dhatu ) are discussed in detail in the book of Dhatukatha Abhidhammapitaka and are closely associated with the doctrine of conditional emergence ( paticcasamuppada ), in particular the six areas ( Ṣaḍāyatana (Sanskrit ) / Saḷāyatana ( Pāli )) and the theory of the Five skandhas. This doctrine also includes the twelve bases ( Ayatana ), which ( organ - object) also with the basics of perception deal. The fact that the three groups of elements to be only in mutual conditionality of what they are ( eye-consciousness, visual object and the eye are interdependent ) refers to its own lack of essence ( anattā ) and thus on the central Buddhist concept of emptiness ( Śūnyatā ).
