The Majjhima Nikaya ( "Collection of medium length treatises ", abbreviation MN, and Mean Collection ) is the second of the five Nikāyas ( "Collections" ), from which the Suttapitaka there. The name refers to the relative length of the suttas contained ( suttas ) that the " long collection " Digha Nikaya and the " shorter collection " Khuddaka Nikaya are mostly medium in comparison to those.

The only complete translation of the Pali original text in German still comes from Karl Eugen Neumann and was built 1896-1902. This translation is now partially failed and antiquated. At the suggestion of Ayya Khema was recently a complete retranslation of Kay Zumwinkel (now Mettiko Bhikkhu ). This translation strives for a more contemporary language and accurate transmission of the terms, but mainly relies on the translation of the Pali text into English by Bhikkhu Bodhi Bhikkhu Nanamoli and by reference to the Pali version.

The mean collection includes a total of 152 suttas are divided into three " fifties groups " ( Pannasa ) to 50 or even 52 suttas again in chapter ten or once - divide by twelve suttas thematically - in the penultimate chapter.

The suttas do not form a discrete but evolutionary context, but stand independently side by side. In the Middle collection the complete teaching of the Buddha is contained in the core already.
