Azra Jafari

Azra Jafari ( Dari: عذرا جعفری ), was appointed by Afghan President Hamid Karzai in December 2008 for Mayor of Nili, the provincial capital Daikondi; they thus became the first female mayor of Afghanistan.

During the reign of the Taliban, she lived as a refugee in Iran. After the invasion of U.S. forces and their allies in Afghanistan and the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, she returned to her native country and took part in the Loya Jirga. Prior to her appointment as mayor, she worked as a teacher and Welfare Rights Organizations.

Jafari is married and has a daughter who was born in 2004. Her husband, Malek Shafi'i, is a filmmaker in Kabul.
