B'utz Aj Sak Chiik

Butz'aj Sak chiik ( born November 14, 459; † probably 501) was a ruler ( Ajaw ) of the Mayan city of Palenque. He ruled July 28, 487 until his death.

Origin and family

Butz'aj Sak chiik was born on 14 November 459 ( Long Count 9.1.4.5.0, calendar round 12 Ahaw 13 Sak ). About his family relationship to his predecessor Casper II is not known. His successor Ahkal Mo ' Nahb I could have been his brother.

Reign

He ascended the throne on 28 July 487 ( 9.2.12.6.18, 3 Etz'nab 11 Xul ). A panel from Temple XVII in Palenque, which was made in the 7th century, called for his reign the foundation of Lakamha ( the Mayan name of Palenque ). The inscription should be read as such that Butz'aj chiik Sak, moved the seat of power of Toktahn, a yet unidentified place with which were his predecessors in connection to Palenque. The panel mentioned in the same context, Ahkal Mo ' Nahb I., indicating that this already possessed considerable power during the reign of his probable brother, possibly even ruled jointly with him. After the death of Butz'aj Sak chiik he took over 501 sole dominion.
