Baba Amte

Murlidhar Devidas office ( Marathi: मुरलीधर देवीदास आमटे, Muralidhar Devidas Amate; * December 26, 1914 in the state of Maharashtra, † February 9, 2008 in Chandrapur, Maharashtra ), known as Baba Amte ( बाबा आमटे, Bābā Amate, dt "Father office ", ), was an Indian human rights activists.

Life

Office was the eldest son of a wealthy Brahmin. He became a journalist, went hunting and drove sports cars. During the holidays he came to Shantiniketan in contact with the writings of Rabindranath Thakur and Sewagram with Mohandas Gandhi, who impressed him very much. Office became a lawyer in Warora. In 1942 he organized during the Quit India movement Lawyers for the leader and was therefore detained. In 1946 he married Indu Ghuleshastri. On his wedding day he gave up his law firm, renounced his property and inheritance rights. Office became a disciple of Gandhi, who awarded him the title " Abhayasadhak ". He founded with his wife in Chandrapur an ashram for leprosy patients, disabled people and members of ethnic minorities. Meanwhile live in Anandwan 5000 people. Together with Medha Patkar Narmada Bachao founded the organization office Andolan, which fights against the Narmada dam project.

In 2007, leukemia was found with him. He died in 2008 in a clinic founded by himself.
